Flexible working is changing. Here's what it could mean for you

From 2027, UK employers will need a good reason to say no to flexible working.

You can already ask to change when, where or how you work, from your first day in a job. At the moment, your employer can say no by picking one of eight business reasons set out in law. From 2027, they'll also need to show that saying no is reasonable.

Why this matters if your brain works differently

If you've ever been told to 'just cope better', this is worth knowing.

A lot of the time, the problem isn't you. It's the way the work is set up. Small changes can make a big difference:

  • a slightly later start time
  • a few hours a week with no meetings
  • instructions in writing, not just said out loud
  • some days at home, away from a noisy office
  • a predictable routine instead of constant last-minute changes

None of those make you less capable. They just tell you the conditions you work best in.

Flexible doesn't mean lower standards

The job still gets done. The standard stays the same. Only the route changes.

And "we've always done it this way" isn't the same as "it has to be done this way".

What you can do now

  1. Notice what gets in your way. Name the barrier, not the label.
  2. Work out what would help.
  3. Ask. You can make a flexible working request now, and from 2027 it gets harder for your employer to say no without a good reason.

It's not lowering the bar. It's checking whether everyone really needs to climb over the same fence to reach it.
