Why we DON'T treat everyone the same 😳👀

Too many words? We’ve got you! Scroll to the bottom of the page for the nitty gritty!

Ever walked away from something feeling like a failure because everyone had been treated the same but you still really struggled?

Here's the thing nobody tells you: that's equality, and equality and fairness are not necessarily the same thing.

Fun fact: Equality means giving everyone identical support. Equity means giving everyone what they actually need to succeed. Done Different is built on equity, because identical doesn't necessarily mean fair.

The reading glasses bit

Imagine a room full of people who all need to read the same page. Equality hands everyone the same pair of +1.0 reading glasses. Fair, right? Everyone got the same thing.

Except the person who needs +3.0 is still squinting. The person who needs audio because reading itself is the barrier. They're not less capable, they just got handed the wrong tool and told to make it work.

Equity means everyone gets what they need. Some people get the glasses. Some get audio. Some get a visual checklist instead of a wall of text. Nobody's getting an easier ride, they're all getting to the same standard, just via a route that actually fits their brain.

This isn't about lowering the bar

This bit matters, so we're saying it plainly: equity is not the same as making things easier. Under the Equality Act 2010, course providers have to make reasonable adjustments, that's how someone gets there, not what they need to prove they know. Same qualification, same standard, different path.

Think of it like climbing a mountain. Everyone's aiming for the same summit, the same qualification. One person takes the direct path. Another takes the route with switchbacks because it's kinder on the knees. Someone else goes with a guide, or uses walking poles, or takes more rest stops along the way. Nobody reaches a different summit. Nobody's climb counts for less. They just got there by the route that actually worked for them.

Why we built it this way

You've probably been the person handed the standard-issue glasses and told to just try harder. Most of us have. Traditional learning assumes one kind of brain does the reading, the sitting still, the six-hour classroom, and if that's not your brain, the system quietly decides the problem is you.

It isn't. You're a llama, not a weird sheep.*

That's why Done Different builds equity in from day one: audio options, visual checklists, flexible timelines, real human contact, not as an afterthought or a special request, but as how the whole thing is designed.

The Nitty Gritty

  • Equality = same tool for everyone. Equity = the right tool for each person.
  • The standard doesn't change, the route to it does.
  • This is a legal duty (Equality Act 2010), not just a nice idea: reasonable adjustments, not lowered standards.
  • Done Different builds equity in from the start: audio, visual checklists, flexible timelines, real human support.
  • You're not bad at learning. You were just handed the wrong prescription.

*New to the llama/sheep thing? Read What if you're not a weird sheep after all? first, it'll make a lot more sense.

  1. I LOVE what you are doing here.
Recognition and understanding that everyone can be on the same level playing field, it's just what we each need to level us up is different. This is exactly what tailored adjustments should be about. Your passion for getting this right for people is so clear and comes through in how you approach learning.
